United Studio Technologies UT Vintage 87 Large-diaphragm Condenser Microphone

Large-diaphragm Condenser Cardioid Microphone with Pad, HPF, RF Filter, and Shockmount

Capture the Essence of a Sought-after Studio Classic

Packing what’s arguably the industry-standard desert-island studio mic into an economical cardioid-only workhorse, the United Studio Technologies UT Vintage 87 delivers instant gratification in myriad production scenarios. The UT Vintage 87 produces enough clean, articulate, open sound to please any German mic aficionado, with low noise and high headroom. Moreover, its true-cardioid pattern is hotter and purer, and boasts a better signal-to-noise ratio than the original model. You’ll be duly impressed by this microphone’s impeccable build quality, which comprises a custom-wound, US-made output transformer and a custom-built, 24-karat gold-sputtered, dual-diaphragm/single-backplate K87-style capsule. Additionally, the UT Vintage 87 houses premium polystyrene, tantalum, multilayer ceramic, and WIMA film capacitors, along with metal and carbon-film resistors and hand-selected transistors. Moreover, this stellar mic is replete with thoughtful features, including a -10dB pad, a highpass filter, and a switchable output filter that blocks RF and EM interference. The UT Vintage 87 makes capturing the essence of one of the most sought-after microphones ever built easier than ever before. Why not put it to work on your next session?

Studio-grade performance begins with the K87-style capsule

To achieve the robust, versatile, and well-balanced sound of the original German-crafted studio classic, United Studio Technologies developed its own custom K87-style capsule featuring a dual-diaphragm/single-backplate design. Precision-engineered using premium components, each UT-K87 capsule is milled from solid brass, skinned with ultra-thin 6-micron Japanese Mylar, and finished with a 24-karat gold-sputtered membrane. Beyond that, every capsule is assembled in a laboratory-grade clean-room environment to ensure flawless performance and consistency.

The heart of iconic tone is a custom-wound transformer

For the UT Vintage 87, United Studio Technologies examined countless iterations of the original German output transformer, drawing inspiration from the larger, more robust designs of earlier models. Recognizing that size often limits performance, the company engineered a custom-wound transformer with nearly four times the metal mass of a typical 87-style microphone. This design eliminates bottlenecks, ensuring nothing is lost as the signal travels through the mic and down long cable runs. The result is an open, three-dimensional sound with exceptional headroom that never compromises low frequencies. Built in the USA with large, all-nickel laminations, this transformer reflects United’s refusal to cut corners. After all, the company could have chosen smaller or cheaper components, but it didn’t. Simply put, every detail of the UT Vintage 87 serves one purpose: uncompromising sonic integrity.

Engineered beyond the classic for modern performance

For the UT Vintage 87, United Studio Technologies endeavored to craft a mic that was more than a mere single-pattern iteration of a German classic. For starters, leaving out the original model’s pattern-select circuitry delivers a hotter, purer, and cleaner true-cardioid response, providing you with a better signal-to-noise ratio than the original microphone.
