A Sonic Revival for Your Studio
Drawing on the circuitry of two generations of Solid State Logic’s legendary 4000 series consoles, the SSL Revival 4000 Channel Strip delivers authentic British console sonics without the need to track down vintage hardware. Its microphone preamp employs the same Jensen JT-115K-E transformer found in the original 4K consoles, while the dynamics section faithfully mirrors classic 4000 series circuitry. The EQ/Filter section blends elements from two distinct SSL eras, giving you flexible tone shaping, and the routing module supports inserts, sidechains, and more. Entirely analog and built with the tried-and-true components found in world-class studios for decades, the Revival 4000 brings SSL’s industry pedigree straight to your rack — whether you’re chasing the punch of a classic ’80s drum fill or carving out a modern mix.
The Sound of a Legacy: Solid State Logic introduces the Revival 4000 Signature Channel Strip
Classic 4000 series dynamics processing
The Revival 4000’s dynamics module employs the same all-discrete design and Class A VCA chip found in SSL’s 4000 E series consoles. Split into two sections — Compressor/Limiter and Expander/Gate — it delivers the full range of dynamic control you’d expect from a classic 4K desk. The Compressor/Limiter lets you switch between the default soft-knee attack with a logarithmic release or a hard-knee attack with a linear release. Since attack and release aren’t linked, you can dial in compression that ranges from smooth and transparent to bold and aggressive. The Expander/Gate section offers flexible signal sourcing, drawing either from the main input or from the sidechain when you want external control. Additionally, just before the dynamics stage, a one-knob De-Esser — modeled after the B series 4000 console — applies a fixed 10:1 ratio at 7kHz with a variable threshold, taming harsh sibilance on vocals with ease.
Two iconic EQ circuits to choose from
A standout feature of the Revival 4000 is the ability to switch between two legendary SSL 4000 series EQ circuits: the grittier Brown Knob (02) and the cleaner Black Knob (242). The Brown Knob EQ, taken directly from the 4000 E console, imparts a distinct sonic character that adds texture to drums, electric guitars, and bass. By contrast, the Black Knob EQ — originally designed in collaboration with legendary producer George Martin — is prized for its tighter, more controlled response, making it ideal for vocals and acoustic instruments while still excelling on electric guitar or bass. Beyond tonal differences, the “242” circuit offers a slightly broader gain range (±18 dB versus ±15 dB on the “02”). The filters also differ: the Brown Knob applies a 12 dB/octave slope for both highpass and lowpass, while the Black Knob increases the HPF slope to 18 dB/octave for added low-end control. Rounding out the section, a dedicated external sidechain input can be applied to both the EQ and Filters, expanding routing flexibility.
Flexible signal routing potential
A hallmark of SSL gear is its flexible signal routing, a trait embraced by engineers who ran audio through the 4000’s Talkback Mic for the punchy compressor tone that defined countless ’80s drum tracks. The Revival 4000 continues this tradition, allowing you to route the Dynamics and De-Esser modules post-EQ, while a dedicated balanced insert point makes it easy to patch in additional outboard gear. A dedicated external sidechain input gives you precise control when carving space for bass or kick drum, and with a second Revival 4000, you can enable sidechain linking to operate the two units as a stereo pair.
